Overview

Our BA Business Management with Sustainability (top-up) is a one-year programme that combines the study of business principles and practices with the knowledge and skills to address the social and environmental challenges of the 21st century.

It will teach you how to apply sustainability concepts and frameworks to various business functions and contexts, such as strategy, operations, and finance.

The degree also develops critical thinking, analytical and decision-making abilities, as well as ethical and responsible leadership skills.

Case studies and practical assessments will enhance your understanding of real-world sustainability issues and solutions and help prepare you for diverse and rewarding careers in the public, private or third sector, where you can contribute to the advancement of sustainability goals and values.

Course details

This is a one year online course aimed at students who want to obtain an Ordinary degree to enhance their career and supplement their existing skills and experience from within business; or for those who have an HND in a business or management related subject who wish to get a degree.

This course offers you excellent employability skills including professional presentation, team working, leadership, communication and problem solving.

You'll enter directly into Year 3 of the degree. Upon successful completion of Year 3, you'll be eligible for a Bachelors degree.

You may choose to transfer to the Business School to complete Year 4 where, upon successful completion, you will be eligible for an Honours degree.

You'll have the opportunity to focus in sustainability issues as they relate to business, and study a range of optional modules from business, finance, and more.

The BA Business Management with Sustainability (top up) will combine the study of business principles and practices with the knowledge and skills to address the social and environmental challenges of the 21st century.  Students will learn how to apply sustainability concepts and frameworks to various business functions and contexts, such as strategy, operations, and finance.  Preparing students for diverse and rewarding careers in the public, private or third sector, where they can contribute to the advancement of sustainability goals and values. The provision is delivered in part-time distance learning mode. Students are typically already in employment and look to advance their career. The proposed provision will empower them to do so, while positively contributing to wider sustainability goals by enabling graduates to implement sustainable business practices into their current and future workplaces.

    You'll learn by a variety of teaching methods including lectures, tutorials and through independent study.

    Assessments

    Individual modules utilise a mix of assessment strategies such as end-unit tests, case studies, reports, and portfolios, which all build progressively to aid the achievement of deeper learning. Embedded in the online study units are approaches to learning that are practical, social, and encourage active learning where possible. This emphasis is intended to facilitate your learning and active engagement with your peers and the programme.

    Work placement

    Many students will undertake this online course while also continuing to work, which can enhance their understanding of sustainability issues in a modern business. There is no specific module during the year to undertake a separate work placement.

    Edinburgh Napier University’s extensive online learning resources. You will be given a dedicated programme handbook that contains all the information you need to know about your programme and studying at the University more generally. You will also be given a student email account and provided with access to our student-focussed online information service myNapier.

    We will also introduce you to our virtual learning environment, known as Moodle, which enables you to engage and interact with a variety of learning support materials specific to the modules you will be studying.

Our entry requirements indicate the minimum qualifications with which we normally accept students. Competition for places varies from year to year and you aren't guaranteed a place if you meet the minimum qualifications.

Minimum Year 3

An HND in Business with grade C at SCQF Level 8

Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements may be considered if they have a minimum of 5+ year's relevant business management work experience.

To succeed on our Global Online degrees you must have access via computer or laptop to view and download written and video content. You will also need basic IT skills that enable you to write and edit document, send and receive email, find your way around our online learning environment and search for and access online learning resources, download files and use online forums.

If your first language isn't English, you'll normally need to undertake an approved English language test and our minimum English language requirements will apply. The test will normally need to be within 2 years of starting your course with us (unless you are studying online with us).

This may not apply if you have completed all your school qualifications in English.    Please check our country pages to find out if this applies to you.

Fees & funding

The course fees you'll pay and the funding available to you will depend on a number of factors including your nationality, location, personal circumstances and the course you are studying. We also have a number of bursaries and scholarships available to our students.

Modules for your course can be purchased through our online store and must be paid in full at the time of enrolment. You will purchase modules in advance of each trimester of study. The fee listed above applies to 20 credits. Please note, the full course comprises of 120 credits in total for BA/BSc (top-up) and 180 credits in total for MSc. Please note that you will pay the module fee according to the academic year in which you study each module, meaning that the total cost of your course will vary depending on the year in which modules are undertaken. If you are paying a fixed programme fee through one of our global partners, the cost will be no higher than if you were buying modules directly from our online store.

Graduates from the BA Business Management Online programme will be well placed to enter employment in management related positions and management trainee posts in both public and private sectors. Graduates from the existing programme suite have secured employment in local authorities, retail management, financial services; media service providers and a wide range of other sectors. You will also have the opportunity to undertake postgraduate study at Edinburgh Napier University or at another higher education institution.
