Sustainable Development Goal 4 Quality education

The fourth of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals is Quality Education - to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Our research

A wide range of our research will have some connectivity to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. We also have a specific research centre dedicated to higher education and a number of our research centres have an educational element.

You can also find some relevant case studies in our Innovation Hub linked to our research and innovation:

Curriculum

As an institute of higher education, we believe in the power and importance of education. Through our ENhance Curriculum Framework we embed education for sustainable development throughout our curriculum. Our interdisciplinary module, ‘Achieving Sustainability,’ is offered as an option to all students across the University.

We are a provider of teacher education and offer five postgraduate courses: Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics and Physics, as well as postgraduate qualifications designed for education professionals seeking to enhance their knowledge and practice in digital teaching and learning.

Lifelong learning, upskilling and CPD

We offer bespoke short courses and custom training to a wide-range of groups, such as charities and SMEs, through our Innovation Hub – from clinical skills to working with professional footballers and the UK construction industry.

We also provide a range of short courses – some of which are fully funded.

More courses and opportunities:

Open access/public

  • We co-founded Everyone’s Edinburgh and offer a free online pathway course and support via the ‘Business for Good’ initiative for businesses
  • We have a range of free courses across the schools, open to the public and we provide a wide range of open access resources through our library
  • We host a range of public events and lectures & every year we run a professorial lecture series which is free, open to everyone and covers a variety of topics
  • The Leadership in Board Governance programme included an open and free “Governance Matters” event and the Bright Red Triangle (our enterprise hub to develop enterprise skills and increase entrepreneurial activity) held many events, services and advice open to all. An example of this was the launch of a city of Edinburgh startup huddle chapter with the Scottish Business Network and the Global Entrepreneurship Network.

Education outreach

We have external guest lectures as part of outreach related to our special collection on World War 1 and we work with local primary schools in providing resources to support primary educators as part of our War Poets Collection. We regularly do outreach work with primary school students the arts & creative industries, collaborating in projects such as the WHALE arts project.

The University community had a significant involvement ahead of COP26, where academics worked with partners to organise an extensive and wide ranging COP26 fringe programme with ‘After the Pandemic’ at Strath Union Youth Hub. The ‘#GetOnWithIt’ programme included a range of high-profile keynote speakers and partners, involved facilitated visits from local schools, and also provided opportunities for our journalism students to capture news, stories and video from COP26.
