The tenth of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals is Reduced Inequalities - to reduce inequality within and among countries.

Our research

A wide range of our research will have some connectivity to reducing inequality within and among countries. Our core academic research themes of Culture and Communities and Environment include a number of impact case studies that have a focus on working with communities to reduce inequalities and our research centre for Military Research, Education & Public Engagement is currently the only research, education, public engagement, and practice unit in Scotland dedicated to the armed forces.

Curriculum

While many of our programmes will touch on reducing inequalities as relevant to the subject matter, all programmes go through our ENhance Curriculum Framework which has 'Inclusion' is a theme.

Policy and practice

Inclusion is one of our core values as an institution and we have a significant focus on widening participation, supporting care-experienced students and reducing inequalities for our staff and students. We have an Inclusion Committee which has oversight of activities to enhance inclusion, health and wellbeing within the University community (both staff and students). We have a range of policies that underpin our inclusion practice:

  • Dignity at Work Policy and Procedure, dedicated to preventing bullying, harassment (of all kinds), discrimination and victimisation
  • Race Equality Action Plan with six themes identified to deliver racial equality and a Report and Support policy and tool to allow anyone who has experienced sexual violence, harassment, misconduct or any form of hate crime to report or disclose incidents to the University
  • Strategy towards Preventing and Tackling Gender-Based Violence, Racial Discrimination, Harassment and Hate Incidents

We provide accessible facilities and services for people with disabilities. Guides from Accessable are available for each of our campuses outlining accessibility options and routes for our students and staff, and we also provide access to many assistive technologies for people who have difficulty speaking, typing, writing, remembering, pointing, seeing, hearing, learning, walking and more.

We are mainstreaming adjustments such as enabling or providing class recordings, adjusting the time allowed for class tests, online open book class tests and providing study materials in advance. Students have access to a dedicated Disability Inclusion Advisor who can advise on and arrange support for a student's requirements in terms of their course and time on campus.

Our Disability Confident Employer Level 2 status demonstrates that we have tested our business against a set of statements about employing disabled people.
