This noncredit bearing continuous professional development (CPD) module has been designed to support the learning needs of staff working in Transitional and Special Neonatal Care areas. It will be of particular interest to Nursery Nurses and Health Care Support Workers, but of equal value to Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals working in these neonatal /post-natal / outreach or clinical areas, who would like to improve their knowledge and understanding of newborns in the first 28 days of life and beyond.

This is an evidence-based education module delivered online over 15 weeks.

Aspects of contemporary evidence-based neonatal care of babies transitioning to extra uterine life will be explored, as well as common problems and treatment options found in the special care nurseries and post-natal wards. Overarching all teaching will be the principles of neonatal neurodevelopmental supportive care and family integrated care practices.

Module Content and delivery.

Over the 15-week module you will be in an online classroom environment, learning alongside a multidisciplinary group of neonatal, midwifery and allied health practitioners. Lessons will be in the form of lectures, discussion groups and group work, brought to you by authentic, experienced neonatal practitioners.

The learning outcomes of the module are:

1.          Differentiate between normal and altered neonatal homeostasis.

2            Explain the physical needs of neonates who require special and transitional care.

3            Explore neurodevelopmental supportive and family integrated care practices.

4            Discuss the role of the special neonatal and transitional care provider in relation to evidence based

                practice.

Virtual Classroom attendance

Your module is based within a virtual learning environment (VLE) called Moodle. This virtual classroom hosts all your lessons, timetables and provides a rich learning and reference area for you to use throughout your studies. Classes run two days per fortnight, usually on a Tuesday and Wednesday of each alternate week. It is expected you will attend all classes and be supported in practice by your manager and allocated mentor.

The module starts week beginning 13th May 2025 and you will be in class online fortnightly thereafter on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 1 August 2025.

Assessment

This is a non credit bearing module with no end of course assessment. However, throughout the module there will be ample opportunity to submit small “tests of learning”. Depending on your workplace environment, your line manager may also wish you to complete a set of specially designed professional capabilities as you progress through the module.

At the end of the module, you will receive a Certificate of Completion.
