Tracing the adoption of a management innovation labelled "knowledge working" in a public sector agency in Scotland
The research is concerned with the evolution and trajectory of knowledge networking (the ‘Knowledge Working’ (KW) initiative) in a public sector agency (PuSA) in lowland Scotland. The study spans a number of years (1996-2007), involves multiple management arrangements across distributed locations, the introduction of tacit and explicit tools – primarily communities of practice and an intranet, and the appointment of specialist staff to facilitate adoption. The analysis is undertaken from a dialogic perspective, which focuses on uncovering the complexity, lack of shared meaning, and hidden enclaves of resistance in operationalising knowledge networking in a distributed organisation.
