What's the Point of Film School, or, What did Beaconsfield Film Studios ever do for the Scottish film industry?
  This is an essay which examines the role of the UK National Film and TV School, Beaconsfield, in nurturing Scottish film-makers in the period 1970-2005. It looks back at the history of the National Film and Television School and identifies Scots who trained at the NFTS and traces the ways in which, in their later careers, they continued to have an impact on the film industry in Scotland. The research investigates the links between their early student films and the later careers of these trail-blazing film-makers. Also the essay charts the key role of Colin Young, the Scottish film educator, who set up the NFTS and was its first Director (1970-92). The essay looks forward to the potential impact of the Screen Academy Scotland, a partnership between Edinburgh Napier University and eca, first established in 2005, and the ways that it might promote the most effective training for film-makers in the 21st century.
