Sports Exercise and Health Science Research Group

Our work revolves around three central areas: sport science, sports coaching and development and physical activity and health. We have specialist knowledge and researchers working in each of these three areas, but our unique strength lies in our cross-collaboration to answer real-world questions that lie in the overlap of these areas.

Edinburgh Napier University represents a unique opportunity for students to conduct a substantial research project as a MRes or PhD in the area of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. Our research focuses on a wide range of topics relating sport, exercise and health. Current themes of excellence include cycling science, sports officiating, football science and physical activity for health. Our department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, housed within our bespoke sport and exercise laboratories (hyperlink to facilities). We also regularly work with a range of stakeholders and partners including British Cycling, Scottish FA, Hibernian FC, Cricket Scotland, NHS Lothian and more.

As a research degree student you will become a member of Edinburgh Napier University’s Graduate College and will be based in the School of Applied Science. You will be supported throughout your studies with training and events hosted locally in the school and by our Research, Innovation and Enterprise events team. Bespoke training will help you develop both your research and transferable skills. In the School of Applied Science you will have access to a range of leading facilities and expertise, including our environmental performance lab, exercise physiology research lab, biomechanics lab and field-based fitness testing equipment. You will join a vibrant and growing community of postgraduate research students within the university, including access to our workspace and social space in our recently refurbished researcher community suite.

We are interested in hearing from applicants who’s research or interests aligns with any of our supervisors. Please explore our supervisors and their interests here and/or current bespoke projects in the first instance as you'll need to identify your research supervisor and/ or project before you make an online application.

If you need help identifying a suitable supervisor, you can also get in touch with Dr David Muggeridge in the first instance.
