Frequently Asked Questions about the DBA programme
The DBA is a three-year programme. You will conduct your research part-time while employed in management. A DBA must be a part-time degree because the DBA involves developing your business practice, and your organisation's business practice.
The first year is spent largely on completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods. This is a requirement for all DBA students at Edinburgh Napier University as it lays the foundations for your doctoral research.
You will also attend research workshops and classes where you will meet other students and staff, who will help facilitate your learning in research philosophy, research design, writing, and presenting research. There are also two optional modules which are: Advanced Qualitative Methods and Statistical Research Methods.
In your second and third years, you will further develop your research by writing a doctoral thesis. The doctoral thesis itself will be about 40 000 words and will document your contribution to theory practice and research methods.
We don't expect a fully-fledged research plan, what we want is an outline research proposal that especially identifies your subject of interest, your topic of interest, and the issues, opportunities, or problems that your research will address.
Due to the applied nature of the DBA, as your DBA research should provide recommendations for your organisation and develop their business, you may find excellent opportunities to develop your career through promotions at your current organisation, academia, entrepreneurial ventures, or elsewhere.
