Biography

Dr Inga Heyman is a registered Adult and Mental Health Nurse and teacher with a clinical, educational and research career in Australia and Scotland spanning 41 years

Inga's professional practice focus lies at the intersect of policing and public health is underpinned by her clinical practice across a broad range of health, police and public protection services including substance use in pregnancy and parenting, substance use harm reduction services, forensic services, adult support and protection and emergency mental health services.

Experience in clinical practice, research and education across a range of disciplines and services has supported Inga in her interdisciplinary teaching and leadership within the university and with external partners. Inga is Lead for Collaborative Practice and Inter-professional Learning in the School of Health and Social Care and module leader for Substance Misuse Across the Lifespan , an inter school policing , criminology and nursing module. Inga is a founding member of the Global Law Enforcement and Public Health education special interest group

Inga works with a range of external partners in an advisory capacities to support policy , practice and research development. These include the Scottish Government Distress Intervention Group, short life working group - Unscheduled Care Management of Individuals presenting with Mental Health Issues, Scottish Government Justice Analytical Services, Police Scotland's Mental Health Governance Group and The National Police Care Network. Inga is also a Research Affiliate to the ESRC Vulnerability and Policing Future Research Centre .

She is Co-Director of the Scottish Centre for Poling & Public Health (SCLEPH), the only centre for LEPH education, practice and research in Europe, and one of two such centres in the world. SCLEPH is an international academic and practice collaboration with key external stakeholders including Police Scotland, people and communities with experience of the police/health intersect, The Mental Health Foundation Scotland, the Global Law Enforcement & Public Health Association (GLEPHA), and the Centre for Law Enforcement and Public Health (CLEPH, Melbourne, Australia) amongst others. SCLEPH has its academic base within the School of Health & Social Care, Edinburgh Napier University and has strong links with the Scottish Institute of Policing Research (SIPR).

Inga has enjoyed a strong and continued affiliation with the Global Law Enforcement and Public Health Association (GLEPHA) as a Board member and conference program member of the 4th and 6th International Law Enforcement and Public Health Conferences. She was Conference Chair for the 5th International Law Enforcement and Public Health Conference and international satellite special interest group events and meetings in Edinburgh 2019

Inga co-convened the National Summit on Mental Health, Distress and Emergency Departments, both hosted by Edinburgh Napier University and supported by the Health & Justice Collaboration Board of The Scottish Government and GLEPHA (www.leph2019edinburgh.com).
She was a program and conference committee member for Scottish Institute of Policing Research 'Scottish International Policing Conference 2018 Policing and Public Health: opportunities and challenges.' and 4 Nations UK Public Health Approaches to Policing and Violence Conference’ February 2021, forthcoming LEPH webinar series and October 2021 Conference.
