Have you always had a passion for design?

From a young age I always had a passion for art & design. I loved visiting the National Galleries in Edinburgh and as I grew up took inspiration from visiting international museums, such as the Louvre in Paris, the Guggenheim museums in New York and Bilbao, and Brick Lane in London.

“My teenage summers were mostly spent working on my portfolio and by the time I was ready to choose a course at university, Edinburgh Napier was a no-brainer. I enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Design programme which changed its name to Design Futures in my second year. The course prided itself on being multi-disciplinary covering everything from design, architecture and business. It encouraged discussion about various issues concerning design including collaborative and environmental practices, material and economic sustainability and corporate social responsibility which allowed us to challenge boundaries and concepts. It provided a strong footing for the world we live in today.”

Can you describe your career journey?

“I graduated in 2005 with a BDes (Hons) in Design Futures and was offered a job as an Account Manager for an award-winning Edinburgh design consultancy. I remained in this role for four years and worked with clients in the real estate sector, financial services and retail.

Following this, I spent the next 10 years climbing the career ladder in London, ultimately becoming an Account Director where I was responsible for a selection of blue chip companies. As a senior member of staff, I was afforded the opportunity of regular travel which progressed my international career options.

In 2016 I moved from London to Bodrum in Turkey where I worked for the luxury hotel brand Mandarin Oriental and set up the quality department. The role pulled on my experience of strategic branding & marketing, implementation of quality standards and high-end client service. Bodrum is a very special place, so I decided to stay for six years. I was then offered the role as the first International Director for The Bodrum Cup - the Aegean's largest sailing regatta. I’m passionate about supporting our future generations of sailors and ensuring the legacy of sailing in the Mediterranean is handed down from generation to generation. The regatta is now entering its 36th consecutive year and I’m proud to continue to be involved with the event every October.

In 2022 I returned to my home city of Edinburgh to set up my own company, Leah Bryce Property Sourcing.

What do you do in your spare time (if you have any!)?

You'll often find me exploring the stunning landscapes of Scotland. I have a deep appreciation for nature and enjoy hiking up the rugged Munros, soaking in the breathtaking views along the way. One of my favourite ways to unwind is freshwater swimming.

Sailing and tennis take up much of my spare time too and I can’t wait for Wimbledon this year! I also love food and cooking and experimenting with flavours, exploring new recipes, and sharing with friends and family.

What advice would you give to someone graduating this year?

For those jumping in at the deep end, fresh from university, and have an idea or desire to start your own business, then go for it! Start small and take it step-by-step, learn from the mistakes but don't let these hold you back as it's an exciting journey which can sometimes feel overwhelming. Plan ahead and do things in stages to achieve your objectives.

“Gather as much experience as you can and be passionate about what you do! Collaborate with like-minded businesses and individuals to help drive growth and future thinking in your organisation

Network as much as possible, go to as many events as you can and say ‘yes’ to invites - as you never know who you might meet. Many of my industry connections and friendships were formed over 20 years ago and it stands you in good stead for starting your own business. Having a team or ‘army’ of brand ambassadors and champions is essential when starting out.
