CHME 2022 Social Activities

Women of Edinburgh May 25th 6pm to 7.30pm

We believe you don't have to be a woman to be a feminist so this Edinburgh walking tour can be delivered by any of our local guides, depending on availability (you cannot choose though!). Discover stories of women throughout History: witches, murderers, mothers and doctors.

Begin your adventure at Maggie Dickson's pub on the Grassmarket and hear the incredible story of how Maggie Dickson survived a public execution in the early 1700s. Then, make your way to Grassmarket Community Project, a social enterprise and find our how they support vulnerable people in our community. You will also learn about the first body snatchers of Edinburgh (women) and the most successful author and Scriptwriter of the UK (also a woman). You will finish the tour at the bottom of the royal mile, hearing more stories of social enterprises that support women nowadays.

Royal Miles from Huts to high Rises- May 27th from 2pm to 3.30pm

This Edinburgh walking tour covers the most famous street in the city. Start at the foot of the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade down to the Tron, on the junction with the Bridges for a brief introduction to how Edinburgh's Royal Mile has developed from timbered medieval buildings to the complex street of today.

Follow Angus who will tell you about many of the Mile's famous closes that offer, a quiet retreat from the busy main street. Get a glimpse into the layers of language underlying the present names of many buildings and areas.

Continually altered, repaired, adapted and sometimes restored, the Royal Mile is a living witness to Scottish history since the Middle Ages.
