Edinburgh Napier has retained its position as number one in the capital for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2021.

The key question in the latest version of the largest student feedback survey in the world revealed an overall satisfaction level of 81 per cent at the University. Overall, satisfaction across the UK was 75 per cent, and 80 per cent for Scottish institutions.

The figure means Edinburgh Napier moves up the Scottish rankings from eighth equal to sixth equal out of 17 participating HEIs, with satisfaction levels higher than those at the other three universities in the city.

Edinburgh Napier was ranked 21st equal out of the 150 institutions which participated across the UK, compared with 28th out of 140 in 2020. We’ve also climbed four places to second spot in the Modern Universities rankings.

The actual overall satisfaction figure of 81 per cent for Edinburgh Napier exceeds the benchmark figure set for the institution (73), which considers the student demographics of each institution.

Our figure has dropped from 86 per cent last year but after a difficult 18 months due to the pandemic, student satisfaction scores are lower across the entire sector.

The NSS is carried out by the Office for Students (OfS) on behalf of the UK funding bodies. As well as capturing student views on the overall quality of their undergraduate degree, the survey gathers students’ responses to a series of questions relating to academic support, learning resources, teaching, management and assessment.

The high-profile census, conducted annually since 2005, produces useful data to help institutions and student unions identify areas of success and areas for enhancement. This year the survey received 332,500 responses.

Edinburgh Napier University had 2,383 final year undergraduate students who were eligible to take part this year.  Response rate was 76 per cent, the same figure as last year.

Satisfaction levels across the six University Schools are as follows; Applied Sciences (77 per cent), Arts & Creative Industries (89), Computing (77), Engineering & the Built Environment (68), Health & Social Care (87) and The Business School (81).

In the majority of the 27 individual question areas Edinburgh Napier’s score is higher than both the UK and Scottish Average (18/27). In three of the questionnaire sections we outperform the Scottish and UK average across all the questions which make up that section - Assessment and Feedback, Learning Resources and Learning Community.
